What is HP Smart?

HP Smart was HP's free app for setting up HP printers and for printing, scanning and copying from a phone, tablet or computer. HP has now replaced it with the HP app, which HP says runs on Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11 PCs, Mac computers, and Apple and Android phones and tablets. The app connects to your printer over your network, so you can print and scan without a desktop setup program, check ink and paper levels, and manage printer settings.

HP Smart Is Now the HP App

HP has replaced HP Smart with the HP app, which combines the HP Smart printer tools with the myHP tools for HP computers. According to HP's HP app page, HP Smart is no longer offered for download on most devices, while the Windows listing in the Microsoft Store still points users to the new app. Printing, scanning, ink-level checks and printer setup all carry over, and signing in with the same HP account keeps your saved printers.

How to Download and Set Up the HP Smart App?

Download the App

  • iOS/Android: Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search for "HP". The listing that used to be HP Smart is now called the HP app; check that the publisher is HP Inc., or start from HP's 123.hp.com page.
  • Windows/macOS: On Windows use the Microsoft Store; on a Mac use the Mac App Store, where the app is listed as "HP: Print and Support". Our install guide has the steps for each device.

Create or Log into Your HP Account

After downloading, open the app. HP says you do not need an HP account to use the HP app, but signing in is required for full functionality, and HP+ printers need an HP account. If you used HP Smart before, sign in with the same account so the app can find your printers.

Connect to Your Printer

Follow these steps to connect your printer:

  • Ensure your HP printer is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your mobile device or computer.
  • Open the app and select "Add Printer". The app will search for available printers and guide you through the connection process.
  • Once connected, the app will allow you to manage the printer’s settings, check ink levels, and more.

Start Printing or Scanning

Once set up, you can start printing, scanning, or copying directly from the app. Select the file you want to print or scan, configure your preferences (such as paper size, type, and quality), and initiate the task.

How to Connect the HP Smart App to Your Printer?

Power On Your Printer

Ensure your printer is turned on. If it's new, make sure it’s properly set up with ink or toner cartridges, paper, and any other necessary setup steps completed.

Connect Your Printer to Wi-Fi

Make sure your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your mobile device or computer.

On printers with a display: Go to Settings > Network Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard, and follow the prompts to connect the printer to your network.

For printers without a display: Use the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) method. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on your printer until it starts blinking, then press the WPS button on your router within two minutes to establish the connection.

Open the HP Smart App

Launch the HP Smart App on your device (mobile or desktop) and ensure your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your printer.

Add Your Printer

In the HP Smart App, tap the “+” (Add Printer) button. The app will begin searching for available printers. Once your printer appears in the list, select it to start the connection process.

How to Use the HP Smart App?

  • 1. Get the HP app (formerly HP Smart) from Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iPhone and iPad). On Windows use the Microsoft Store and on a Mac the Mac App Store, or start from HP's official 123.hp.com/setup page.
  • 2. To connect your HP printer, open the app and follow the instructions on the screen. Printers connected to the same Wi-Fi network will be identified by the app, or you can manually connect by inputting the printer's IP address.
  • 3. After connecting, your mobile device can be used to manage print jobs, scan files, and print documents.
  • 4. Discover the app's sophisticated capabilities, such as the ability to modify documents prior to printing, change the print quality, and pick which pages to print.

Troubleshooting Common Issues with the HP Smart App

Not Found the Printer

Ensure your device and printer are connected to the same wireless network. If the problem continues, restart your router and printer, or follow our printer not found guide.

Print Jobs Not Getting Entered

Remove the job from the print queue and send it again. Restarting the app or printer usually resolves this; if the app itself will not open, see our app not working guide.

Low-quality Print

Use the app's maintenance features to clean the printhead and check your ink levels for better print quality.
